What actually works for male pattern hair loss

Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is one of the most researched conditions in men's health. Two treatments have decades of clinical evidence behind them:

• Finasteride — an oral medication that reduces the hormone (DHT) responsible for follicle miniaturization. FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss and shown in clinical trials to slow further loss and, in many men, produce visible regrowth over several months.
• Minoxidil — a topical treatment applied to the scalp that improves blood flow to hair follicles and prolongs the growth phase. Available over the counter, but often used most effectively as part of a physician-directed plan.

Used together, these two treatments have the strongest evidence base of any non-surgical option. Many other products on the market — supplements, laser caps, shampoos — have far less clinical support. A physician can help you cut through the noise and focus on what's actually likely to work.

Setting realistic expectations

Hair loss treatment is a long game. Most men see the first meaningful results at three to six months, with fuller effect at twelve months. The primary benefit for many men is preventing further loss, with regrowth as a secondary benefit — so starting earlier tends to produce better outcomes. Treatment is ongoing; stopping usually means the hair loss resumes over the following months.
